Sunflowers are an easy and fast investment for fresh seeds every year, and are very easy to grow also! You should never have to buy the same variety of seed more than once! 
Once the petals have fallen, wait for the green leaves around the head to start turning brown or yellow. You will notice the head will also drop from all the lovely heavy seeds being formed. This is the perfect time to harvest seeds. If you have birds or squirrels local, you might want to cut back a bit sooner and hang to dry indoors. 
Sunflowers also are good feed for birds but also great for us. They are high in vitamin E and magnesium, they can aid in lowering cholesterol and blood sugars.
